As mentioned in Thing 10, many libraries (including EPL!) are using social networking sites, such as Facebook and MySpace to reach patrons where they live & play online. This expands their outreach and services, and can reach some patrons who may not often visit the library’s website, but check their social networking profiles daily (if not hourly!).
Some libraries are also incorporating Web 2.0 tools into their websites.
Discovery Exercise:
- Take a look at these examples:
- Hennepin County Library’s BookSpace allows readers to make book lists, browse other patrons’ lists, add comments to a book’s catalog record, sign up for RSS feeds of other patron’s lists or comments, and more!
- Ann Arbor District Library allows patrons to add tags to a book’s catalog record, review books (using a familiar star rating system), and more!
- Blog your thoughts about these uses of Web 2.0 tools and functionality within the library’s website.
